Description

Zinc is a chemical element with the atomic symbol Zn and the atomic number 30. Zinc is classified as a transition metal, but occupies a special position within this group as its properties are more similar to those of the alkaline earth metals due to its closed d-shell. In the outdated classification, the zinc group is referred to as the 2nd subgroup (analogous to the alkaline earth metals as the 2nd main group); in the current IUPAC nomenclature, zinc forms group 12 with cadmium, mercury and copernicium, which is only relevant in research. It is a bluish-white, brittle metal and is used, among other things, to galvanise iron and steel parts and to make gutters. Zinc is essential for all living organisms and is a component of important enzymes. The name zinc comes from Zinke, Zind (‘tooth’), as zinc solidifies in a jagged shape.

* This is a recommendation based on our experience with these materials in our sputter guns. Rates are based on unbonded targets and are material specific. Bonded targets should be operated at lower power to avoid bonding failure. Bonded targets should be operated at 20 watts/square inch or less depending on the material.
