Description
Hafnium is a chemical element in the periodic table of the elements, with symbol Hf and atomic number 72. It is named after the Latin name of the city of Copenhagen, Hafnia, where the element was discovered. It is a lustrous silver-grey, corrosion-resistant transition metal of the titanium group. Hafnium has very similar properties to zirconium, which is directly above it in the periodic table. It has no known biological function, is not normally found in the human body and is non-toxic.
When present in high purity, hafnium is relatively soft and malleable. It can be easily worked by rolling, forging and hammering. However, if traces of oxygen, nitrogen or carbon are present in the material, it becomes brittle and difficult to work. The melting and boiling points of hafnium are given as 2,227°C.
